Happy Fall!

As we welcome the fall season, this month we turn our attention to the serious issue of opioid addiction and the impact it has on the workforce and workplace and how the public workforce system and employers are responding to this crisis.  We are also excited to share with you an opportunity to participate in a peer-to-peer team challenge aimed at increasing access to high-quality workforce services for individuals with disabilities.

Finally, we highlight some materials that have been developed as part of National Deaf Awareness Month (occurring annually each September) that are aimed at assisting deaf individuals succeed in the workplace.  Both the peer-to-peer challenge and the highlighted materials are especially relevant and worth sharing as next month, October, is National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Resources to Assist in Fighting the Opioid Epidemic

Over the past couple of years, widespread abuse and addiction to opioids painkillers and illicit opioids has increased greatly, negatively impacting all facets of our country, including the workplace.  Public workforce development professionals are on the front lines of this crisis in helping to address this nationwide problem and finding ways to reintegrate workers affected by opioid abuse and addiction.

To assist workforce development professionals in this effort, the WorkforceGPS Team has compiled a number of resources, including fact sheets, technical assistance tools, and case studies of effective responses.  These materials have been organized on one resource page and will be updated as we identify more resources.  Addressing this ongoing crisis is a high priority for the Department of Labor, and we hope these items will be useful to you.

Workforce Innovation Cohort Challenge

In an effort to increase access to high-quality workforce services for individuals with disabilities, the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) is providing an opportunity to state and local workforce systems to participate in three peer-to-peer cohort teams on the following topics: 1) Accessibility; 2) Customer Service; and 3) Employer Engagement. National Deaf Awareness Month

September is National Deaf Awareness Month. Communities throughout the country are organizing events and activities to increase awareness of deaf issues, people, and culture. One way ETA is contributing is by highlighting Workplace Resources for the Deaf on WorkforceGPS.

Take care!
