Greetings Fall!

The weather is cooler, and the leaves are changing in many parts of the country.  As we enjoy the seasonal switch, we also turn our attention to the renewed interest and revitalization of apprenticeships.

Next month, we will be celebrating National Apprenticeship Week (November 12-18, 2018), and in preparation for that, we have gathered a number of resources and success stories to give you the opportunity to learn from your peers—this is not your father’s apprenticeship program anymore.

Apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs are being developed in all industry sectors, especially in in-demand fields, and these flexible earn-and-learn models are opening doors to new career paths and family-sustaining wages.

We are also excited to share with you an opportunity to assist employers to hire Veterans through the Vets Medallion Program that is being co-sponsored by the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) and Veterans Employment and Training Service (VETS).  Veterans Day is just around the corner, so if you work with employers, this program is a wonderful way to assist both employers with their hiring needs and Veterans in finding employment.

Last but not least, October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). NDEAM celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and educates about the value of a workforce inclusive of their skills and talents.  Check out the Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy website for a copy of the official 2018 NDEAM poster available for downloading or to order in hard copy.

Resources to Assist Apprenticeship

As apprenticeship continues to develop and diversify across the country, more individuals and organizations are getting involved in this work.  WorkforceGPS’s Apprenticeship Community has gathered a compilation of resources and tools to help you better understand the new and exciting opportunities that are now being explored by employers and other organizations in the field of apprenticeship.  Everything from Apprenticeship 101 resources to the emerging and innovative Industry-Recognized Apprenticeship Programs (IRAPs) that are popping up in various industries across the country.  These materials have been organized on one resource page which will grow as we find more materials.

HIRE Vets Medallion Program

The HIRE Vets Medallion Program was created to recognize employers of all sizes for their efforts to recruit, employ, and retain our nation’s veterans.  The program is the first of its kind at the federal level, providing an opportunity to recognize and reward employers committed to hiring America's veterans. ETA and VETS programs continuously seek to improve the national workforce system by integrating the needs of both job seekers and job creators of all sizes, and the HIRE Vets Medallion Program is a unique, innovative step forward in that development.  As you meet with employers as part of your business engagement efforts, be sure to inform them about this new program to recognize their great work in hiring veterans.  Find more at HIREVETS.gov or on the Veterans' Priority WorkforceGPS Community page.

Take care!
