Supporting Our Customers in Various Ways

advice-help-support-tips-signpost-shows-newsletterTechnology has allowed the publicly-funded workforce system to greatly expand our reach with our customers.  Many people never have to step foot into an American Job Center because they can now access the tools and resources they need right from home.

But many still need additional, tailored, assistance, be it creating or updating their resume, talking to a career counselor about possible jobs that might be a good fit, or getting answers to their questions about training opportunities in their fields of interest.  Other customers may need help in accessing supportive services like childcare, tax credits, or information about various benefit programs.

The ultimate goal is to meet customer’s needs as best as possible and to assist them in obtaining the services they need in order to get the job and career that best suits them.  For some, that may just be interviewing tips or local labor market information, and for others, it may involve multiple referrals to other partner programs and services.

During the month of August, we will be highlighting supportive services and resources that will help you provide assistance to jobseekers and employers.  Two examples of the types of supportive services’ resources for youth can be found on WorkforceGPS here.  If you have a new or exciting approach you’d like to share with your colleagues, we’d love to hear from you.  Just send us an email at support@workforcegps.org.

Voices of Experience

share your storyOver the last several months, we at WorkforceGPS have developed a series of short videos that “tell a story” featuring how workforce leaders like yourselves have creatively changed how they conduct business in response to the pandemic.  These stories, which are short video interviews, have been captured and recorded in a podcast series we call Voices of Experience.  The individuals interviewed encompass the broad range of workforce system professionals and customers of the system including career counselors, workforce board members, young people who have received services, employer representatives, partners and more.  To check out all of the videos, just type Voices of Experience in the search box at the top of the homepage of WorkforceGPS.  Below are just a few of these interviews.

CareerOneStop Suite of Tools

careeronestoplogo_tcm24-129CareerOneStop is the flagship career, training, and job search website for the U.S. Department of Labor.  The website serves job seekers, businesses, students, and career advisors with a variety of free online tools, information and resources.  A How-To-Guide, called A Skills Roadmap for Case Managers, has been developed that helps anyone navigate through the tools in CareerOnestop.org. The how-to-guide covers:

  • Practical tips for how case managers can understand several online career planning tools at their disposal;
  • Eight "At-A-Glance" templates that help case managers determine which electronic tools are most helpful to meet which customers’ needs;
  • "Career Transition Roadmaps" illustrating how case managers provide career exploration in three distinct scenarios; and
  • An “E-Learning Resource Chart” that highlights additional resources for case managers who want to learn more.
