Serving Those Who Need It Most

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) establishes a priority requirement for recipients of public assistance, other low-income individuals, and individuals who are basic skills deficient. States are required to develop policies and procedures for applying this priority, including monitoring local areas’ compliance with this priority. When COVID hit and the publicly-funded workforce system moved to providing services primarily in a virtual format, many individuals in these targeted areas found it more difficult to access our services. But states found many creative ways to provide services and continue to do so as American Job Centers (AJCs) re-open for in-person services across the country. One example are virtual job fairs that match employers and interested jobseekers by using technology to make the connection. If you are looking for resources, technical assistance tools, and best practices for serving special populations, Workforce GPS has an entire page of resources that may be of use to workforce practitioners. job-fair-newsletter

During the month of September, we will be highlighting additional resources that will help you provide assistance to jobseekers that fall into these special population categories. If you have a new or exciting approach you’d like to share with your colleagues, we’d love to hear from you. Just send us an email at support@workforcegps.org.

WIOA State Success Stories Report

gears newseletter The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) State Success Stories Report features stories from WIOA Title I Programs, including Adult, Dislocated Worker, and Youth programs, and provides valuable examples of how states are implementing WIOA to help job seekers gain employment. Excerpted directly from the Program Year 2019 States’ WIOA Annual Report Narrative, these success stories highlight the impact of WIOA programs nationwide. Specifically, they show how states have leveraged the diversity, innovation, and flexibility of the various workforce programs and services that WIOA offers, and have used them to assist individuals in gaining economic self-sufficiency. The narratives speak to job seekers’ participation in industry-specific training, certification programs, vocational rehabilitation, employment assistance and placement services. Each of these accounts demonstrate how WIOA Title I Programs assist job seekers in overcoming social, economic, or personal barriers.
