4:00 PM ~ 5:00 PM ET

Adult students bring their life and work experience to the classroom and need differentiated approaches to teaching methods, delivery models, and student supports to flourish.  This webinar will focus on three examples of colleges that have used a host of innovative, promising strategies to support adult students.

Description

From varying learning styles to work experience and family obligations, adults re-entering the classroom have different needs, commitments, and priorities.  For institutions serving adults learners, understanding the appropriate strategies to support them is critical.  A number of adult-focused strategies will be explored in this webinar, including hands-on or work-based learning, accelerated developmental education, credit-for-prior learning, and wrap-around student supports.  College staff from three states will share their experiences implementing these strategies, funded under Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) program.

  • Mississippi contextualizes and accelerates developmental education through its Mississippi Integrated Basic Education Skills and Training (Mi-BEST) program, to increase the ability of adults to obtain college credentials.
  • South Central College’s Minnesota Advanced Manufacturing Partnership Project (MnAMP), creates work-based learning opportunities, offered credit-for-prior learning and provided additional services to help adult students work while completing their degree.
  • Chaffey College’s InTech Center provides classroom and hands-on instruction and a dedicated job placement specialist to provide access to career opportunities in a wide array of fields.

This webinar is part of the Innovations Leading to Career Success Webinar Series and showcases strategies and resources developed by community colleges engaged in career-focused education and training.  The colleges featured throughout the series are grantees of the TAACCCT program, a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Education.
