The Urban Alliance High School Internship Program is a 10-month paid, professional internship program currently active in Washington, DC; Baltimore; Chicago; and Northern Virginia.
Founded in 1996, Urban Alliance (UA) is a unique paid internship program that pairs high school seniors with mentors in professional settings. Operating in four regions nationally, the UA has partnered with over 500 businesses and 100 schools to provide over 4,000 young people with paid internships and another 18,000+ youth with professional development training. One hundred percent of UA students graduate from high school; over 90 percent are accepted to college. An additional 80 percent of enrolled alumni persist to a second year in college, and 80 percent of all alumni are connected to a college, career, or career-training pathway one-year post-program.
UA serves economically disadvantaged students on the verge of graduating high school who are at high risk of not connecting to further education or meaningful work. The program provides professional or “soft” skills training, access and exposure to direct work experience, and meaningful adult relationships to help young people connect to pathways that lead to self-sufficiency.
Paid interns work part-time during the school year—Monday – Thursday for up to 12 hours per week—and full-time during the summer—Monday – Thursday for up to 32 hours per week. Each intern is assigned a dedicated UA program coordinator, as well as a one-on-one workplace mentor, who provides support to guide the intern’s professional development and post-high school planning. Interns complete up to six weeks of pre-employment job skills training and then transition into weekly post-high school planning and job and life skills workshops for the duration of their internship.
